Hi, I'm Washington State expungement attorney Stephanie Dorn. In this short informational video, I want to talk a little bit about what it means to vacate a conviction in Washington State.
First of all, the words vacate and expunge are kind of used interchangeably for the same concept, which is essentially taking your guilty plea or guilty verdict and turning it into a not guilty verdict.
Then, the court dismisses the charging document and releases you from all penalties and disabilities associated with the crime. That specific language is in the orders. The orders state specifically that I can state that I have not been convicted of this, for all purposes, including housing and employment.
The vacate record gets processed through the Washington State Patrol, who is the repository of records. Then, they send it up through the FBI, who update their records accordingly and remove the conviction.
