Given the severity of his pancreatic cancer diagnosis, Peter Rosow felt he needed more than just the standard chemotherapy treatment another center had recommended. After a trusted friend, who also happened to be a doctor, told Peter to reach out to Dr. Ruggiero at Weill Cornell Medicine’s Gastrointestinal (GI) Oncology Program, Peter sought him out. Dr. Ruggiero and the Weill Cornell GI Oncology team were able to offer Peter access to more cutting-edge treatment options that were not widely available, and he enrolled in the pancreatic cancer clinical trial that saved his life. Under Dr. Ruggiero’s care and expertise, and as a result of the clinical trial, Peter’s tumor shrank. After some additional sessions of radiation, the tumor completely disappeared. Three and a half years after his initial diagnosis, Peter “feels fine”. More importantly, he says, “I’m still here.”

I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December of 2011. I was diagnosed at another major cancer New York center. And I was told at the time that I had about a year to live, and they offered me the standard chemotherapy treatment. Given the seriousness of my problem, I felt that I wanted and needed more than just the standard treatment. A very good friend of the family, who was a physician, encouraged me strongly to go to Dr. Ruggiero at Weill Cornell, because he was dealing with a brand new pancreatic cancer therapy, that had just been reported out literally within the last few months from a clinical study in France, with excellent results. So that's how I got to Dr. Ruggiero and Weill Cornell. The studies that we've done and the care that we've provided over the past couple of years has rather dramatically improved survival for these, you know, fairly common and often very difficult to treat cancers. It allows us to provide cutting edge therapies that are not yet generally available. And that's really essential in cancer therapies. The objective was to shrink this tumor sufficient so it could be removed surgically. The tumor shrunk, I had the surgery, but it could not be removed. It was too tangled up with blood vessels and things. I then had 27 radiation treatments, and at the end the tumor was gone. It's been three and a half years since my diagnosis and I feel fine, and I'm still here.
