This is a review of the Zoom F3 audio recorder, which has some unique features and advantages, as well as some drawbacks. I bought this as a backup audio recorder for my videos. In the past I’ve had several videos I never published because I didnt go back to rerecord after discovering A: the audio never recorded, B the audio recorded but had static or other noise. Talk about disappointment. This is what will prevent that from ever happening again. That’s called peace of mind and it’s priceless.

The Zoom F3 has two XLR inputs with very low self-noise and can record in 32-bit float format, which allows for a wide dynamic range and the ability to recover clipped audio in post-production.

The Zoom F3 can record up to 192 kHz sample rate and does not have a traditional gain setting or meter. Instead, it has an amplification setting that affects the recording level to the SD card before starting the recording, and the output level to the analog output and headphones after starting the recording. This means that if the recorder is used for live audio or sending audio to a camera, the amplification level needs to be set carefully to avoid clipping. The output also has a limiter to prevent clipping in those situations.

The Zoom F3 is a two-track recorder that can record in mono or stereo mode. It has a plastic body with metal corners and a quarter inch mounting point on the bottom. It also has belt loops for attaching it to a belt or wrist strap. It is powered by two AA batteries or USB-C and can last for six hours with a condenser microphone. It can also be used as an audio interface for a computer with 32-bit float or 24-bit linear recording and playback. It has a loopback feature and direct monitoring feature for reducing latency.

The Zoom F3 has a small monochrome screen that is bright and easy to see in any situation. It records on micro SD cards up to one terabyte in size. It has an optional Bluetooth add-on that allows for remote control via an app on iOS or Android, and also for connecting to an Atomos UltraSync Blue timecode generator. It has a 3.5 mm line output that can output at line level or mic level, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack that supplies up to 50 mW per channel and works best with low impedance headphones. It has good RF immunity and does not pick up interference from wireless signals.

Some of the drawbacks of the Zoom F3 are that it does not have quarter inch or 3.5 mm inputs, so adapters are needed for some microphones or sources. The battery door is plastic and not very sturdy. The Bluetooth add-on is an extra and is held in place by friction. The belt loops can get in the way of mounting the recorder flush to a surface. The headphone amplifier seems somewhat colored and not very powerful for high impedance headphones.
Overall, the Zoom F3 is a unique recorder that offers some advantages for certain use cases where size, weight, power efficiency, and wide dynamic range are important, but also has some limitations that need to be considered depending on the situation. For me it’s a the best 32bit float recorder out there right now and that’s why i bought it.
