1989 Nissan D21 Hardbody 4x4 King Cab Z24 5 Speed 4 Banger.

In this video I take a weekend to freshen up an old truck. With minimal tools, skills and budget, similar results can be had with just a couple of days worth of work. Your vehicle can go from something you are embarrased to drive to something that you are proud of. It's easier than it looks and fulfilling. Every paint job is different but here are some steps I took to paint this truck.

Step 1: Figure out how in depth your paint job will be. There is such a large spectrum with painting. You could spend a couple of months and a couple grand or you can spend a couple of hours and less than $100.

Step 2: Figure out what primer/paint/clear you will be using. Make sure the base chemicals are compatible.

Step 3: Acquire supplies; Paint kit, paper, plastic, tape, sand paper, wax & grease remover, rattle can spray adapter, additional tips with a wider fan pattern etc.

Step 4: Stop second guessing yourself and get in there. You will be surprised with your results no matter your skill set.

Step 5: Remove everything you can in advance(lights, bumpers, mirrors..etc)

Step 6: Wash your car really good with a degreaser. I used Dawn dish soap.

Step 7: Fix rust or desired dents.

Step 8: Sand entire vehicle with 320ish to prep for primer. You just have to scuff the paint for the new primer or paint to stick. Scuff pads are also an option. (Wear protection!)

Step 9: Wax and Grease remover

Step 10: Tape everything that you don't want paint on including the floor, nearby cars, exhaust tips, the frame underneath.

Step 11: Tac Cloth, Primer(optional), then sand again with 400-600 grit.

Step 12: Follow the cans direction. Light coats recommended. If you burned through to the metal while sanding, make sure to prime with self etching primer before you paint so you can get maximum adhesion.

Step 13: Clear(optional)

Step 14: Wet sand/buff(optional)

Step 15: Stand back and enjoy your hard work. Thank you for watching and happy motoring!!!
