In the United States, US health insurance is privatized and does not pay for DNA sequencing to find genetic causes of most genetic diseases. In developing countries there is neither insurance nor technical availability. In UK, EU, and Canada, sequencing is often covered by health insurance systems. So we developed a sequencing analysis process here in our Control of Gene Expression Lab and Pediatric Retinal Research Lab that lets us test 8 genes for about $200 per sample DNA. Our panel is aimed for rare conditions of FEVR, Norrie Disease, and Retinoschisis. This is how to start alignment of 1.5 gigabases of DNA reads to the genome sequence on our Illumina iSeq100 system. In this case 16 samples are run at the same time through analysis. The cost of $200 for 8 genes beats $4,000 for a couple genes. We hope to pass on our method knowledge to other groups in US and the World.
