Princess Wanda is an iconic figure in Polish mythology, whose story has traversed the centuries in various forms. According to the most widespread version, she was the daughter of King Krak, the legendary founder of Kraków. After her father's death, she allegedly took the throne. A German prince, Rytygier, who was in love with her, proposed marriage. When she refused, he invaded her country. Wanda then led her troops to victory, but to prevent future conflicts due to her status as a princess, she threw herself into the Vistula River, thus ending her life.
This version was popularized by the Polish medieval chronicler Wincenty Kadłubek in the 12th century. However, other versions exist. In the Chronicle of Wielkopolska, Rytygier, after being rejected, invades the kingdom. He dies in battle, and Wanda then commits suicide to thank the gods for the victory. Another version, relayed by the historian Jan Długosz in the 15th century, tells that Wanda killed herself to prevent future suitors from invading her kingdom. These tales have helped shape Wanda's image as a symbol of sacrifice and patriotism.
