Among them flew Lieutenant William Roach, a young American pilot from the 358th Fighter Squadron, part of the 355th Fighter Group. The mission had gone wrong from the start — poor visibility, faulty navigation, radio confusion. The group had become separated, fuel gauges sinking lower with every anxious minute.
