The break-even point in economics, business—and specifically cost accounting—is the point at which total cost and total revenue are equal, i.e. "even". There is no net loss or gain, and one has "broken even", though opportunity costs have been paid and capital has received the risk-adjusted, expected return.Break-even analysis tells you how many units of a product must be sold to cover the fixed and variable costs of production. The break-even point is considered a measure of the margin of safety. Break-even analysis is used broadly, from stock and options trading to corporate budgeting for various projects.
