Recently one of my videos was demonetized by YouTube but I was not given any specific reason, but rather vaguely told that it was not "advertiser-friendly". The video was about the Aleppo conflict and its corresponding media narratives. After reviewing YouTube's policies on what is and isn't advertiser-friendly, it is clear that my video fell in their vague policy on "controversial" news. That specific policy is shown below:

"Controversial or sensitive subjects and events, including subjects related to war, political conflicts, natural disasters and tragedies, even if graphic imagery is not shown"

In this video I show that this policy is very misleading, and hypocritical as well. This is because the same ad network that YouTube uses to show ads is through the Google AdSense/AdWords network. This very same ad network is what many websites also use, but the policy regarding "controversial" news does not actually apply to them. So it does not seem to be a case of being "advertiser-friendly" at all. In fact, some advertisers prefer to advertise on videos discussing news about war or political conflicts, because it aligns with their product or service, for example a mobile app on WW2. Also, advertisers already have the option to show their ads on any type of video or channel they want, or to even restrict their ads in any way they want. Thus it is very clear that the policy is not at all about being "advertiser-friendly".

The policy also very negatively affects independent alternative news outlets because they lose out on the revenue they could be making. While at the same time, this limits the competition that corporate or government funded news outlets would have to compete with. Many of these government funded news outlets receive billions in tax-payer money. Corporate funded news outlets also have huge financial backers so any loss in YouTube revenue has very little affect on them. What's interesting is that even with billions in funding, state-sponsored news outlets like the CBC or BBC, and corporate funded news outlets like New York Times, don't necessarily mean their viewership is all that high. For example a relatively new independent news outlet, the Rebel Media, started off with $100,000 CAD crowd funding campaign, have amassed a much larger viewership per day than most highly funded news outlets.

But it is independent media like the Rebel Media that are the ones that this YouTube policy truly hurt. YouTube has the chance to be a true meritocracy in which the users themselves choose which video or channel resonates with them the most, rather than be left with only highly funded news outlets. YouTube should avoid playing any role in directly or indirectly censoring alternative news outlets, and should remove this policy.

Also, at the very least YouTube should change the wording and reasoning for its policy because it is clearly nothing to do with advertisers.

On a side note, and possible new video opportunity, why are governments funding through tax-payer money any news outlet in the first place?
