Mid-March 2022, I was contacted by residents on Mirabeau Drive in Newark telling me that there was a kitten in distress with a possible broken paw. I came out a few times and finally caught a glimpse of the limping kitten. On 3/18 I was able to trap the kitten late at night using a humane trap. What I found upon inspecting the kitten wasn't pretty.

While the paw looked injured, the actual worst injury was severe trauma resulting in a big abscess oozing pus. The reason the kitten could not walk was the severe pain of putting weight on its right front paw. There was so much pus and such a bad reek coming form the wound that we had to wear face masks to be near it. Due to the severe injury, I drove to Veterinary Emergency Group in San Ramon that same night at 11PM. I got out of the clinic at 2AM.

The injuries could be treated. The "kitten" was sedated, the wound cleaned, necrotic tissue removed and a long lasting antibiotic Convenia injection was given. The kitten made it though the surgery and is now recovering in our home in a warm and safe space and is eating and drinking like a champion while continuing to be on pain mediation.

The surprise: the vet determined the cat is actually not a kitten but a neutered male cat and relatively friendly. He has the size of a kitten and is most likely a lost or even more likely an abandoned pet.

The cost of the medical treatment was $475. The recovery will likely take one month. We are attempting to raise $650 in order to cover expenses such as food, litter, further treatment and transport costs. Any excess amount raised will benefit other rescue cats that Woody Cat Rescue is helping.
