Karen Read’s Attorneys Fight to Have Murder Charge Dropped in Fiery Hearing

Attorneys for Karen Read are fighting to have two charges against her dropped after a mistrial was declared in July. Her attorneys brought their arguments to Massachusetts’s highest court and pleaded their case Wednesday morning. They claim jurors came forward after the mistrial and said they all agreed she was not guilty of second-degree murder. During the hearing, several of the justices fired back at they defense's key points. Attorneys for the Commonwealth also made arguments. A decision about dropping the charges has not yet been made.

Karen Read faces several charges including second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence of alcohol, and leaving the scene of personal injury and death. She was arrested in February of 2022, a few days after John O’Keefe died. If convicted, Read faces life in prison. A mistrial was declared in July in her first trial.
