The U.S. passes the Volstead Act and eventually the 18th Amendment, bans the manufacture, sale, distribution, possession, and consumption of alcohol. Overnight we become a nation of outlaws, giving rise to organized crime figures such as Al Capone and Bugsy Moran who wage war on each other for control of the alcohol trade, culminating in the St. Valentines Day massacre. Illegal bars known as speakeasies pop up to meet the nations thirst. Alcohol is smuggled in across borders on aboard ships, and is produced by stills throughout the south. Americans become experts at hiding our alcohol and evading the law. A new breed of federal law enforcement emerges with men like Eliot Ness and his group of incorruptible 'untouchables'. The need to transport alcohol unseen and at time outrun the law, leads to drivers and mechanics improving their skills, which gives birth to the sport of stock car racing and NASCAR. The failed social experiment of prohibition fails and is ultimately repealed with the passage of the 21st Amendment.
