As a starting point, Chaya Czernowin's Irrational - originally composed for the New York based chamber ensemble "Loadbang" comprised of four different instruments and then arranged for Ensemble du Bout du Monde at the composer's request - deliberately tests the unity of the ensemble and the musicians. Using the unique timbres of the four saxophones, they sometimes act as a unified organism, but they also split into fragments in wild, untamed ways. Can they stay together, or do they break apart? In this swirling work, which introduces elements of comic relief juxtaposed in a detailed, resolutely modern soundscape, the question of risk and reward is explored.
