[Dr. Vemuri Nagashankar begins speaking]

"Hi, I’m Dr. Vemuri Nagashankar, Neurosurgeon at Raghavendra Hospitals and Leela Karthikeya Hospitals. In my daily practice, patients often ask whether it’s safe to drink water or eat after a neurological event like a stroke, during recovery from surgery, or after being under anesthesia.

Let me explain why we must be cautious in these situations. When a patient experiences a neurological issue, whether it’s due to a stroke, head injury, or anesthesia recovery, the swallowing muscles can become weak, leading to difficulties in swallowing. This condition can result in aspiration pneumonia—a serious risk when food or liquid enters the lungs instead of the stomach, causing infection and complications.

For patients recovering from neurological issues, such as stroke or head injury, or even those who have been sedated for surgery, the muscles responsible for swallowing might not function properly. As a result, even when the patient is conscious, the brain may not trigger the necessary reflexes to swallow food or liquids safely.

In such cases, if food or water is consumed, it can be inhaled into the lungs rather than the stomach. This is known as aspiration, and it can lead to aspiration pneumonia, which is dangerous and can cause infection, fever, and even choking, leading to life-threatening complications.

For patients with swallowing difficulties, it’s crucial to monitor their intake of food and fluids. In some cases, they may need to be given parenteral nutrition (via saline) rather than consuming food or water directly. Sometimes, feeding tubes are required to ensure they get the nutrients they need safely.

The main takeaway is that, while hydration is vital, those with neurological problems should avoid drinking water or eating immediately after surgery or neurological incidents unless under medical supervision. If you or a loved one is recovering from a stroke, neurological surgery, or dealing with swallowing difficulties, it’s essential to consult your healthcare provider for a personalized recovery plan.
