In this NRP 79 research project, scientists take a closer look at a silent cornerstone of biomedical research: the breeding mouse mom. While the 3Rs – refine, reduce, replace – guide how experimental mice are treated, this study asks whether those same principles are being applied to the mothers who raise them.

By studying the physiology, metabolism, and behavior of these unsung caregivers, the team aims to redefine breeding strategies – and offer overdue respect to the mouse moms behind the scientific progress.
