The Israeli army has begun telling Palestinians to leave Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of civilians have sought refuge during the war and where Israel says thousands of Hamas fighters are hiding.

Israel's closest supporters including Germany have warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against an offensive in the city because of the likelihood of high civilian casualties.
