Egloshayle Ringers commemorating a side of Cornish Bellringers

Описание к видео Egloshayle Ringers commemorating a side of Cornish Bellringers

A song in praise of a famous side of church bellringers from North Cornwall. The events date from about 1810 and the song was collected by Rev Sabine Baring-Gould in the 1890s, though several versions still survive in the villages around Wadebridge. The song was collected around the time my great grandfather left East Cornwall, so I like to think he knew it. Sung by Alan Rosevear in Exeter. Roud Number 1163.

EGLOSAYLE RINGERS
Come all you ringers good and grave come listen to my peal
I'll tell 'ee of five ringers bold that lived in Egloshayle
They bear the sway in any array when they've the chance to go
Good music of melodious bells tis their delight to show.

The foreman gives the signal, he steps long with his toe
He casts his eye about them all, and gives the sign to go
Away they pull with courage full, the heart it do revive
To hear them swing and music bring one, two, three, four, five.

There's Craddock, the cordwainer, first that rings the treble bell
The second is John Ellery: and none may him excel
The third is Pollard, carpenter, the fourth is Thomas Cleave
Goodfellow is the tenor man that rings em round so brave.

They went up to Lanlivery, they brought away the prize
And then they went to Saint. Tudy and there they did likewise
There's Stratton men, Saint Mabyn men, St. Issey and St. Kew
But we five lads of Egloshayle can all the rest outdo.

This little corps, they rang so sure, no changes did they fear
No man did ever miss his turn: 'twas joy to see and hear
And people then, from miles around, o'er valley hill and dale
Told of the fame of those ringers bold that lived in Egloshayle

Now to conclude my merry task now in this toast we join
Stand every one I pass the flask and drink their health in wine
and here's to Craddock, Ellery and here to Thomas Cleave
To Pollard and the tenor man that rings 'em round so brave.
