In 1933 F. W. Thing began and then abandoned Sheepmates, the story of an English man played by Campbell Copelin who looks for adventure in the Australian outback.

The opening scenes showed Copelin getting work on a British ship to make his way to Australia ...

The following scene, centred around a game of euchre in an outback workers' hut. They featured British actor Henry Wenhman, and Thring can be briefly heard directing the actors, the only surviving footage in which he does so.

A notable feature of the footage is the outsize clapper board. Thring is commonly credited with inventing the device. (Imagination is required to make the following links work);

Copelin had a wiki here. (He had previously starred for Thring in the drawing room comedy Clara Gibbings)

At time of writing, Wenham didn't have a wiki.

Sheepmates had a wiki listing here with useful links.

F W Thring, later best remembered as the father of legendary ham Frank Thring, had an ADB bio here and a wiki listing here.

"Contemporaries lamented the loss to theatre and the film industry through Thring's early death. Gladys Moncrieff recalled him as 'a gentle and exceptionally kind man' who 'knew the theatre and what he wanted he eventually got'. Ken Hall considered him the first Australian to 'make professional sound feature films'. If some doubted his artistic ability, all praised his skills as a producer. He was, said Monkman, a man 'whose big body was matched by his courage, vision and ambition'."

Before his untimely death, Thring would turn to comedian George Wallace in his largely futile quest to match Hollywood and produce a commercial hit.
