Today I wanted to share with you an informative video on two of my favorite natural insecticides for the garden. Dipel dust and Diatomaceous earth.

Both of these are vital to a successful garden, in my opinion, and the D.E. has a myriad of benefits far beyond garden use which make it a practical and almost vital product to have around the house in my opinion.

Dipel dust is a biological insecticide that is organic, all natural and OMRI certified. It contains B.T., or Bacillus Thuringenisis. A natural bacteria that will kill anything that is a worm. Any thing that starts out as larvae, turns into a worm and later a moth, this will eliminate. You must top dress the soil and the plant to be successful and reapply after a rain. Do this a few times throughout the growing season and you will help to ward off tomato horn worms, tobacco horn worms, pickle worms, cabbage worms and squash borers. I sprinkle it on my tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers, squash and pumpkins to make sure we don't get any of those nasties, getting comfortable in our garden!

The next thing is Diatomaceous earth, which is a prehistoric gift from the earth to you in so many ways. I recommend that you only purchase food grade D.E. that you can use in the garden, on your pets and on yourself! We use this in the garden and cast it about the soil to help get rid of slugs, snails and anything with an exoskeleton like Mexican squash beetles, Japanese beetles, ants, Palmetto bugs and even pill bugs or what my girls used to call "roly poly" bugs.

D.E. is also a very effective, all natural pesticide that you can use to get rid of pests in your home. We sprinkle D.E. around all our window sills, and doorways to our home. We dust our pets with it in the summer time to ward off fleas and ticks and we also put it in their food to help avoid intestinal worms. This can be added to livestock feed and it gives them a mineral boost along with helping with the intestinal worm issue. You should consult further research about that. I don't have any livestock, I only know what I have read with regard to that topic.

D.E. is also good for you! You can mix with water and consume it for intestinal health and mineral boost to your own system. You can also make your own D.E. capsules and take them daily instead of drinking the stuff, which can tend to be a bit off putting to some people.

I hope this information helps you to understand the benefits of these two powerhouses in the garden when it comes to pest control!

Happy Growing!
