Battle of Gela: Allied Invasion of Sicily - Part 3

Following successful landings on the shores of Sicily, which turned out to be considerably lighter and with much lower casualties than anyone expected, the following day, on July 11th, Axis forces launched a fierce counterattack on the port of Gela, in the area held by the American 1st Infantry Division. Although the combined Italian–German attack on Gela on July 11th was by far the strongest Axis counteroffensive of the campaign, and while it slowed the advance in the centre portion of the American landing zone, it had no long-term impact for the rest of the campaign.
