1968: Is ALF GARNETT the PIPE SMOKER OF THE YEAR? | BBC Archive

Warren Mitchell has been given the Pipe Smoker of the Year award for 1968. However, the actor is refusing to accept the award, brandishing it a "stunt" and admitting he is not proud to be a smoker, nor is he inclined to endorse or advertise pipe smoking.

His alter ego - Till Death Us Do Part star, Alf Garnett - might be a little more open to persuasion.
