Velveteen Lop Rabbit 101: Part 1

Описание к видео Velveteen Lop Rabbit 101: Part 1

The Velveteen Lop is another one of the more popular breeds of rabbits in America and is a breed that was specifically bred to have those sought-after lopped ears.

Compared to some other rabbits with lopped ears, the Velveteen Lop is actually one of the newer breeds and has not been around for as long as the other types of rabbits, which are popular as domesticated pets in America.

This rabbit is so popular that it actually has its own Velveteen Lop Rabbit Club of America. According to the group, this breed was created, when a certain Virginia Menden started breeding it back in 1990 to produce a type of rabbit that she can showcase for its lopped ears. Another one of her goals was to create a rabbit with a mandolin-type body but has the other physical characteristics of the popular Mini Rex. In that case, she mixed the Mini Rex rabbit breed together with the English Lop to create a breed that has the lopped ears of the English Lop and the fur of the Mini Rex. It was named after the rabbit in the book entitled The Velveteen Rabbit.

As popular as the Velveteen Lop is, it took a while for it to get recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association. But that did in any way diminish its popularity among different types of rabbit breeders, not only in America but everywhere else in the world, where rabbits are considered some of the best-domesticated pets to have in any kind of household.

Physical Description.

The Velveteen Lop is a medium-sized domesticated rabbit that has some of the standard physical attributes found in most American rabbits that were meant to be petted. As originally planned when it was bred, the Velveteen Lop carries a body that is shaped like a mandolin. What that means is that its body gets bigger and rounder as you start from the head until you reach its butt where it is at its roundest. The top line should have a sudden and steep arch that starts from the back of its neck, similar to the way a mandolin arches.

In terms of how its body is built, the Velveteen Lop looks well-muscled despite how round and fluffy it actually is. This is in stark contrast to how most domesticated rabbits found in America are round precisely because of their plump and stout body build. It is most developed in the shoulders and the hindquarters. In other words, the Velveteen Lop is made to have a muscular build instead of having a body that is fat and plump.

The Velveteen Lop’s head should feature a shape that is wedged. However, the muzzle and cheeks of this rabbit tend to differ. There are those that have muzzles and cheeks that are wide and full, while others tend to have slender or tapering ones that may also be wide in some cases. It also features a head that is moderately long and a neck that is very short to the point that you can hardly notice it.

Velveteen Lop stands out when it comes to its ears. It was specifically bred to have the lopped ears of the English Lop. That means that its ears should be falling down instead of upright. It usually lies flat behind the rabbit’s eyes and tends to start low. However, unlike the other rabbits with lopped ears, you can actually see the inside part of the Velveteen Lop as the ear usually faces outwards towards the front rather than inwards towards. Velveteen Lops have ears that are very long.

Most of these rabbits can have ears that are actually about 15 inches overall from the top all the way to where it starts on the top portion of the rabbit’s head. Nevertheless, the rabbit’s ears will never be longer than the length of its body as it usually is proportionate to the overall length of the Velveteen Lop. The ears also a bit wide and can be as wide as a quarter of the length of the ears.
