We took a few risks hiking this volcano...

Our day started in a speed boat on Lake Atitlan with the summits of Volcan Atitlan and Tomilan towering over the surroundings.

We were planning on doing our last trek in Guatemala and Central America, a trek to the summit of Volcan Atitlan, the highest Volcano in the area.

Like all the hikes we did so far in Central America, this too was unguided, and again like most, a bit daunting, due to the risk of robberies in the area.

Unlike the previous day when we hiked to the summit of Volcan San Pedro, this hike didn't have any park entrance, guides, tourists, or police stationed along the trail. It was just us and the locals.

The hike to Volcan Atitlán, with its trail leading over the clouds and steam coming out of its craters, was an unforgettable and perfect finale to our Guatemalan and Central American trip.
