Dogs 101 - VIZSLA - Top Dog Facts About the VIZSLA

The Viszla is a medium-size dog breed in the Pointer group, and has its origins in Hungary. Its ancestors were popular as hunting companions among Magyar tribes as far back as the 10th century. These tribes settled in the region that is modern-day Hungary because of rich game available in the area, and these dogs stayed a favorite among land-owning aristocracy over the centuries. The Vizsla bloodlines were guarded across generations and the breed had been established by the 18th century. Introduction of foreign Pointers led to near extinction in the 1800s, but it was revived through careful breeding of a few good specimens. After World War II and during the Soviet period, Hungarians carried the breed to different parts of the world, which helped popularize the breed outside their native land.

What do you think, give it your best guess in the comments below before we get to the answer! Hang on tight and we’ll get back to this Ruff Trivia Question toward the end of the video.

The average weight of the adult Vizsla is between 45 and 65 pounds. The height of the male is generally between 22 and 24 inches and that of the female between 21 and 23 inches. It is a lean, lightly built dog with well-defined musculature. The coat, almost always in a shade of golden rust, is short, smooth and dense. Moderately long neck, thin moderately long ears hanging close to the cheeks and well-developed jaws meeting in a scissor bite are characteristic to the breed. In the US, the tail is generally docked to two-thirds of its original length.

Grooming:Coat care is a breeze in case of the Vizsla. Brushing once a week, with an occasional bath, should be enough. Its strong, fast-growing nails should be trimmed regularly, and cleaning of teeth and ears should be regular as well.

Temperament:The Vizsla is a caring, loyal, sensitive and extremely affectionate breed. It forms close bonding with its owners’ family, especially children. It even gets along well with strangers, and requires some training to be a good guard dog. It is known to start whining if feeling neglected.

Training:The Vizsla is a very intelligent breed and takes to training very easily. Training should be firm but gentle. Its hunting instincts have been perfected over centuries, and it likes nothing better than being in the open pursuing its quarry. Physical exercise needs are high, and it is best suited for an active family. It can get destructive or depressed if it doesn’t find an outlet for all its energy.

Health:The life expectancy of the Vizsla is 10 to 14 years. Though a generally healthy breed, the fact that a few localized specimens form its foundation gene pool has led to some hereditary illnesses. These include hip dysplasia, epilepsy, sebaceous adenitis and a few types of cancer. Some other health problems that are seen in the breed are dwarfism, hypothyroidism, retinal atrophy and some heart related issues.

Bred to be a close-working gun dog, the Vizsla is a loving, sensitive, versatile and easily trainable breed. Its high energy makes it a perfect companion for an active owner, who spends a lot of time outdoors.
