Video Summary:
Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBs) are drugs that inhibit renin angiotensin aldosterone system, like angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors). They primarily block AT1 receptors through which angiotensin II exerts most of the effects. Drugs in this group are candesartan, eprosartan, losartan, olmesartan, telmisartan, valsartan, irbesartan and azilsartan. Their uses and side effects are similar to ACE inhibitors. They are used in hypertension, heart failure, post MI patients and in diabetic nephropathy. Side effects are hypotension, hyperkalaemia, renal failure in patients with renal artery stenosis and teratogenicity. They do not interfere with bradykinin breakdown, so cough and angioedema are less frequent with ARBs as compared to ACE inhibitors.
