Does your child repeat everything that you say?!

This video is for you!

Help your child or client decrease echolalic tendencies in 3 simple steps!

1) Switch from "WH" question to "YES/NO" questions!
IF you child does not respond to yes/no questions, check out this video:    • HOW TO TEACH TODDLERS TO ANSWER YES &...

-Exaggerate when using YES and NO with VISUAL cues and prompts!
After you model YES! - then remover verbal prompt and stick with the visual! (using sign for yes, head nod, big smile, "yay" hands, etc, or even mouth the word with no sound!)
-Cut snacks/treats into SMALL pieces to lengthen the number of trials/repetitions you perform!

(IF your child has no response - HELP them respond by physically shaking their head for them or by hand over hand helping them to do the sign.

-Once your child masters YES, change to "NO!"
use a NEGATIVE reinforcer (something your child does NOT like) like a gross textured or sensory object (example used is onion or spinach leaf dipped in olive oil) Model YES or NO - while changing positions of the words, NO or YES?! to extend learning to comprehend meaning of words. IF child says YES, GIVE THEM THE NEGATIVE REINFORCER to DRAW ATTENTION to the WORD that the child said! model: "You said YES!"

Then RE-TEACH skill by modeling no and walking through the same approach as yes by diminishing amount of cues. Look for a PAUSE to represent that the child is word finding! Then help them by giving them the word if necessary - DONT FORGET TO COUNT TO 5 in your head to give them enough time to process a newly learned skill and respond!

2) After your child has mastered YES/NO - move to WH (WHAT) questions, and provide 2 OPTIONS - ONE PREFERRED AND ONE NON-PREFERRED

Model and continue to positive or negatively enforce whichever your child says!

3) Help your child build receptive language skills through "fill in the blank" opportunities such as "I WANT ____" by pointing and waiting for the child to indepdently fill in what they WANT. Model this by saying "MOMMY WANTS COOKIE!" and pop a piece of a cookie in your mouth! Then model for them "I WANT ____" and pause to allow time for them to fill in the blank, if they do not fill it in, HELP them by modeling the word and then giving it to them. Also switch between positive and negative reinforcers for this skill as well!
