Executive summary: The most important value creation concept is the value proposition. It has 4 fundamental parts: 1) the important unmet customer and market Need; 2) the Approach for the offering and business model; 3) the Benefits/costs of the offering (i.e., value); and 4) the Competition and alternatives. The 4 NABC questions set the direction for your value creation initiative. If they are not convincingly and quantitatively answered, you still aren't sure what you are doing and you are likely going in the wrong direction. This is one of the core ideas that transformed SRI International from failing for 20 years to being a model for the creation of high value innovations, such as HDTV and Siri.

Carlson was CEO of SRI International from 1998 to 2014 and is now CEO of Practice of Innovation, LLC and a professor at Northeastern University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Before Carlson, SRI had previously been in decline for over 20 years and was near bankruptcy. After Carlson became CEO, the company grew over 3 times and created with its partners a series of world-changing innovations, such as HDTV and Siri (now on the iPhone). His teams have won two Emmys and he has won four honorary degrees. He was a member of President Obama's National Advisory Council for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and on the NSF Engineering Advisory Board and the Singaporean NRF Scientific Advisory Board.
