During Cari-Bois' fourth Climate Breakdown webinar on May 16, 2024, Greenpeace Bonaire activist, Mr. Onnie Emerenciana, shared a firsthand experience of how climate change affects vulnerable communities on the Caribbean island of Bonaire.

Mr. Onnie Emerenciana is a well-known agriculturalist and activist in Bonaire.

Emerenciana works closely with Greenpeace to raise awareness about the effects of climate change on Bonaire and advocate for authorities to make progress on ensuring the island is climate resilient.

In a recent interview with Greenpeace, Emerenciana lamented, “It becomes more difficult to transplant and grow vegetables.”

Drought, as a result of climate change, could make agriculture on Bonaire considerably more difficult in the future while rising sea levels, extreme heat, and dying coral, could cause people on Bonaire to lose their jobs, land and important cultural heritage.

But Emerenciana is optimistic that as long as people pay attention to the problems, and organize themselves to take action, solutions to be these problems can be created.
