Conflict theory is a macro-sociological theory, primarily developed by Karl Marx. Near the beginning of the industrial revolution, Marx proposed that society was divided into two classes: the bourgeoisie who own the means of production – e.g. factory owners – and the proletariat who serve the bourgeoisie – e.g. factory workers. Marx predicted that the proletariat would eventually revolt against the bourgeoisie to reduce the socioeconomic conflict in society. More generally, conflict theory predicts that when one group in society has more power than another, there is a natural buildup of tension that only conflict can resolve. As opposed to another macro sociological theory, functionalism, conflict theory predicts that extreme social changes will occur swiftly.

Feminist theory is a macro sociological theory that is a specific branch of conflict theory. Instead of focusing on class inequality, feminist theory focuses on gender inequality. A classic area of concern in feminist theory is income inequality – seeking to explain and provide solutions for why men and women can work the same job with equal competency, but women will be paid less.
