New Zealand is famous for its beautiful coastlines and abundant sea life but dredging has severely depleted and, in some cases, wiped out its mussel beds. Scientists at the University of Auckland and local communities wanted to find a way to rejuvenate the beds and tried out a radical solution: dropping empty shells onto the beds to create reef-like structures that living mussels could then bind to. The process worked and is now generating lots of international interest for its potential to transform other decimated marine areas around the world. Emma Keeling reports.
