🐢 A Stunning Paleontological First for Syria! Scientists have officially described the country's first-ever fossil vertebrate species: a 50-million-year-old sea turtle named Syriemys lelunensis.

Discovered near Afrin and stored in an Aleppo office for over a decade, this incredible fossil is finally telling its story. An international team led by the University of São Paulo has identified it as the oldest known member of an extinct turtle group called the Stereogenyini, pushing back their evolutionary history by more than 10 million years!
