Tonsils and adenoids are normal, lymphoid organs present in the oral cavity and at the back of the nose. When they become big in size or get repeated infections, they can cause symptoms. This is a problem of childhood. The child is generally brought by the parents to either a paediatrician or an ENT surgeon with a long-standing, unrelenting cold. Most often, these problems are manageable with medication. Very few children will require surgery. Surgery is largely limited to those children who are not responding to medication and in whom the symptoms are caused by obstruction, causing problems in breathing, hearing or facial development.
