Pilot Fatal Crash! The SIMPLE Mistake Got 2 Pilots Killed, New Discoveries...
The plane was just 150 feet above the ground. The runway was right there. And then—suddenly—it flipped upside down and slammed nose-first into the dirt. This is Doug Happ, an 81-year-old war veteran and respected local pilot. Beside him, his friend Gregg Low. Both men died instantly. No mayday. No time to react. Just silence. And here’s the part that makes it even harder to believe: the sky was clear. The engine was fine. So what went so horribly wrong in those final seconds? The answer lies in one simple mistake—a mistake even experienced pilots still make. And what we found in the investigation will truly shock you.
The Occupants
Pilot Fatal Crash! The SIMPLE Mistake Got 2 Pilots Killed, New Discoveries...
This wasn’t some joyride by a couple of weekend warriors. The man in the left seat was Douglas Happ, 81 years old—and a legend in his own right. He wasn’t just a pilot—he was an ATP-rated aviator with over 19,000 hours in the air. That’s more time flying than most commercial airline captains. And he wasn’t new to Torrance—Doug was a well-known, respected figure at Zamperini Field. He flew out of there regularly and had recently taken on the challenge of flying something a bit different: the sleek, sporty Arion Lightning LS-1.
But here’s where it gets tricky: despite his enormous experience, Doug hadn’t completed a formal flight review since 2008. Instead, he was flying under BasicMed—a looser certification standard that doesn’t require the rigorous FAA medical evaluations older pilots used to face. And according to FAA toxicology reports, Doug had doxylamine and pregabalin in his system—both substances known to impair motor skills and judgment. Now, we’ll get to that later. But keep that detail in your back pocket.

Sitting beside Doug was Gregg Low, 59 years old. A private pilot with about 200 hours of flight time—not a veteran, but not a rookie either. Gregg wasn’t just a friend; he was a business partner. The two had recently teamed up to co-own the Lightning. They shared a love for aviation and had big plans ahead. That day’s flight? Just routine touch-and-go practice. No pressure. No passengers. Just two pilots doing what they loved.
But this is what makes the crash all the more devastating. These men weren’t taking risks. They weren’t flying into weather or pushing performance limits. They were flying a pattern—at a familiar airport—on a clear day.
And yet… something went wrong.
