Naples, Italy

Описание к видео Naples, Italy

Naples (Napoli) Italy, located on the southwest coast of the Italian peninsula, on the Tyrrhenian Sea, is the third largest city in Italy and is the capital of the Campagna region.

Napoli is an intense, tightly configured, noisy and sometimes smelly city that embodies the southern Italian culture and spirit. Napoli is also, in my opinion, the culinary epicenter of the region. Although it seems to some people to be a bit “gritty” the old-world baroque beauty, culture and charm of this place, along with the local tastes and smells, makes Napoli a truly unique example of the lifestyle of southern Italians.

Admittedly, we only spent a few days in Napili (but we lived in Italy for 6 months), and stayed in the center of the downtown port area, walking distance to the city center and the port of Napoli overlooking Castel Nuovo. Our hotel also had great views of Castel Sant’ Elmo and was close to Chiostri di San Martino. To fully experience the city would literally take weeks, depending on your interests.

This was our 1st trip to Napoli and it was really a remarkable coincidence for me relative to my quest to gain dual Italian-American citizenship (which I achieved one month after our visit to Napoli!). In fact, the only real unique thing about this video, the reason I was inspired to make it, are the ties I have to Campania, Naples, Italy and New York, USA.

Side Note: My grandfather, born in the Campagna region of Italy, shipped out with his brother-in-law, Antonio Francisco from the port of Napoli - near the Palazzo dell Immacolatella - in early October, 1923. After being onboard a steam ship (in third class) for 2 weeks, they arrived at Ellis Island, New York, exactly 100 years to the day of our visit to Napoli! My Italian grandparent’s immigrant story is incredible, and I hope you can follow me thru my upcoming Italian citizenship videos if you want to learn a little bit more about the process (that really only took me 9 months!). Gaining my Italian citizenship was a life changing and humbling privilege, one we shall always remember!

On a rainy Wednesday morning last October, in Napoli, we went on a previously booked street food tour of the city offered by “Streaty” the master of Italian street food tours. This was a very lively and interesting experience, and we sampled some food that we never would have otherwise known we could order. This was a walking tour that took us thru the outdoor market of Pignasecca and the intricate alleys of Quartieri Spagnoli and ended at the famous mural to Napoli soccer legend Diego Maradona (located at Via Emanuele de Deo 60).
If you want to see Napoli from the street level and food perspective, this tour is a must do.

The rest of the trip, we just wandered around the downtown Napoli area (and there is so much to see and do!), tasted various pizza’s, went to a couple great (and inexpensive!) cafes and restaurants and sampled street foods and gelato’s while taking in as much of the Napoli vibe as time permitted. I want to say that we were never once scared or targeted as tourists, and used our best judgement as to where to walk and how late to stay out. We will definitely return in the future and spend more time in the city and the region. I highly recommend this experience to anyone that likes adventure and getting out of one’s comfort zone.
