Let's talk about safe cutter compensation for thread milling. To minimize the number of offset adjustments, use a starting cutter comp that creates a thread near the upper limit of the spec, allow it to wear into nominal specs, then the lower limit, and then adjust cutter comp when it is close to going out of spec and the go gage gets tighter. While straight threads need about 0.001”-0.005” cutter comp on diameter for a new tool, tapered threads need about 0.007” – 0.015”. Once cutter comp is established for a new tool, all following new tools should be able to start with the same initial value. Be aware that when adding cutter comp some CNC machines use radial offsets and some use diameter offsets.
