A key focus of the project was to ensure a seamless experience for travelers, greeters, retail and food and beverage workers, and the day-to-day operations managed by APAM. The design approach aimed to infuse the space with local character and transform the Arrival Hall into a civic hub that prioritizes comfort and functionality.
Warm and welcoming, the hall features timber batten feature walls and ceiling recesses, creating a pleasant atmosphere. Additional glazing on the façade and raised internal ceilings optimize natural daylight and contribute to intuitive wayfinding. The sensory journey of light and materiality throughout the space evokes the cultural identity of Melbourne and Victoria, reinforcing their position as Australia's cultural center.
Situated beneath the existing 50-year-old elevated departures road and interfacing between Terminals 2 and 3, the project required integration into two terminals at a critical structural node. The design team efficiently optimized physical and visual connections by reconfiguring the internal layout, making structural modifications to the existing envelope, and maximizing the hall's depth without encroaching further into the forecourt.
The refurbishment includes an expanded building footprint, revamped interior, a central greeting point for passengers, increased circulation space, improved vertical transport provisions, enhanced connectivity between T2 and Domestic terminals, and upgraded retail and amenity offerings. These improvements aim to reduce connection times and create a more comfortable and enjoyable airport experience.
Wayfinding plays a central role in the spatial experience of the project, and the entire consultant team contributed to its success. A digital BIM model was developed, allowing for effective coordination, validation of existing conditions, and clash detection. The model was also shared with the contractor, minimizing construction RFIs and delays.
Remarkably, the project was delivered in a live, operating landside environment without redirecting anyone through the terminal. Digital collaboration tools and workflows were utilized during construction to minimize disruption to airport users and operators. The project was completed on time and within budget, a testament to the meticulous planning and execution.
Locally sourced materials were prioritized wherever possible, and the use of spotted gum, a celebrated timber species, created a stunning centerpiece for the project.
With its completion, the T2 Arrivals Hall now stands as the international gateway to Melbourne and Victoria, ready to welcome millions of international travelers each year. It has been designed to accommodate future growth while offering a personable environment focused on human scale and engagement.
