Описание к видео Streak-Throated Swallow | Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary Birding | Wild Karnataka Biodiversity Hotspot

Welcome to the lush wetlands of Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, where biodiversity thrives and the skies are alive with motion. In this video, we feature the agile and industrious Streak-Throated Swallow (Petrochelidon fluvicola), also known as the Indian Cliff Swallow, one of the lesser-known yet fascinating aerial acrobats of India.

📍Located near Srirangapatna in the Mandya district of Karnataka, Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is a vibrant biodiversity hotspot that attracts birdwatchers, photographers, and nature lovers from all over the country. Just a short drive from Mysore, this sanctuary offers boat rides, scenic river views, nesting islands, and close encounters with hundreds of bird species — and even marsh crocodiles!

🪶 About the Streak-Throated Swallow (Petrochelidon fluvicola)
The streak-throated swallow is a small, fast-flying bird with a deeply forked tail, dusky plumage, and the distinctive streaked throat that gives it its name. Often spotted in small flocks above rivers, lakes, and marshes, these swallows are a delight to observe as they dart through the air in pursuit of flying insects.

Their mud-cup nests, typically built in colonies under cliffs or bridge ledges, are architectural marvels. At Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, you can find them nesting along rocky embankments and man-made structures near the water — often close to human activity but always expertly concealed.

🌱 Ecology & Conservation
The Indian cliff swallow plays a crucial role in controlling insect populations, especially mosquitoes and crop pests. Its nesting behavior also contributes to ecological complexity, supporting microhabitats for other small organisms.

While currently listed as "Least Concern" by the IUCN, these birds are vulnerable to the loss of nesting habitats due to urban development and water pollution. Sanctuaries like Ranganatithu Bird Sanctuary are vital for their continued survival, offering safe, undisturbed nesting and feeding zones.

🎥 In this Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary YouTube video, we showcase high-speed footage of the streak throated swallow in flight, collecting mud, constructing nests, and feeding mid-air. Their precision and persistence make them a joy to watch and a critical part of India’s rich avian diversity.
