Horsegirl live @ Fine Line, Minneapolis MN (July 26, 2022)

A couple of years ago I had the great fortune of seeing Horsegirl at Minneapolis' Fine Line. I was already going to be in the Twin Cities for another show and Horsegirl came up on my Songkick as a possible band of interest. And damn, Songkick was not wrong. These ladies (Nora, Penelope, and Gigi) out of Chicago are young (18 and 19 at the time of this show) but sound mature beyond their years. Theirs is a sound that melds their influences (no-wave, post-punk, a variety of indie music) and filters them through their unique voice. Nora and Penelope's combined vocals are almost otherworldly (listen to 'Beautiful song' at 21:11 for a taste) and their guitars chime with melody which they counterbalance with dissonance while Gigi just kills it on drums. At a time when it can be so easy to NOT play music and to piss away time on TikTok and other social media, the band and a group of their peers have forged this DIY community of likeminded musicians and artists in Chicagoland that is a wonder to behold. Their debut album 'Versions of Modern Performance' out on Matador, was one of my favorite releases of 2022 and I cannot wait to see them live again and to hear what else they've got in store for our ears.
