NPZ 1P78 "Kashtan" Optical sight, with a magnification of 2.8x, is one of the issued optica of the russian motorized rifles and, airborne units. It comes in three versions, the first being for 5.45x39 rifles such as the AK74M or AN94 Abakan. The second version is for the RPK-74M also in 5.45x39mm, and is identifiable from a slightly more rear biased mount shape. Lastly the PKM/PKP version is marked for ranging on a 7.62x54mmR platform and features one of different mounts. There is a PKM specific mount that is swept very far back so the feed tray may be opened while the optic is in position. The other mount is very much in line with the RPK mount and is used on the PKP which has a side hinging dovetail to allow the sight to be canted away from the top feed cover during reloads. The optic uses an amber lens for crispness sunglare reduction and is lit in low light by a 15-20 year lifespan tritium reticule. features the common German Post reticule design.
