Written in 1919, The Hourglass consists of three colourful pieces that evoke scenery relating to each title. The first movement, 'Dusk' has a dreamy quality, with a drifting nature. The second movement 'The Dew Fairy' is light and tranquil with expressive harmonies. The final movement 'The Midnight Tide' paints the different elements of waves, how it flows and subsides, with the water surging into a climax in the middle of the movement.
