Birds biologically cannot taste capsaicin - the chemical that makes peppers feel 'hot' in your mouth.

The Carolina Reaper is the hottest pepper in the world. It's 200 times hotter than a Jalapeño. The little red firecracker should be sold with several ice lollies and a doctor's note. But for birds, it's just another snack. Why? Because they have considerably fewer tastebuds. A chicken has just 24 taste buds, and pigeons have 37, compared to 10,000 currently in your mouth.

It's thought that hot pepper plants become selective about the animals that eat their fruit. These plants want their fruit to be eaten by birds as the seeds can survive through their digestive system as they fly for miles, then do their morning business on your neighbour’s car. Let that be a lesson to us all, bird poo is probably the hottest hot sauce nature has created.

So, don't go smearing it in a sandwich (unless it's your older brother's).
