Over generations, his descendants expanded their power across southern England. In the 9th century, Wessex faced its greatest threat: Viking invasion. While other kingdoms fell, Wessex survived. Its greatest ruler was Alfred the Great, who defended England, reformed laws, promoted learning, and laid the foundations of a united nation. Alfred’s children and grandchildren pushed back the Vikings, and in 927, his grandson Æthelstan became the first King of all England.
