A charming fishing village in the south of Sardinia
Overlooking the Sulcis archipelago, which includes islands such as San Pietro and Sant'Antioco, Portoscuso is one of the most interesting tourist destinations in southern Sardinia. Founded by the Spanish as a fishing village at the end of the 16th century, with the name of Puerto Escuso or "hidden port", this town later became an important trading hub - and that meant it needed a castle.
The imposing 16th-century tower still dominates part of the skyline, adding to the character of this little town. But Portoscuso is best known for its tuna fishing, a trade that has its own local festival. You can also see the Su Pranu Tonnara, a 17th-century structure used to kill the tuna after the catch. Even today, the tuna trap is still used each year between May and June.
The broad beaches and crystal-clear waters are just perfect for a spot of peaceful sunbathing. Although the beaches are crowded during the summer season, they are quiet and secluded during the rest of the year.
