A major fire erupted in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district on Wednesday afternoon, rapidly spreading across bamboo scaffolding at a residential complex and triggering citywide alarm. The blaze began at Wang Fuk Court at 2:51 pm, with firefighters immediately deployed as thick black smoke rose high above the neighborhood.

Authorities quickly escalated the emergency from a No 1 to a No 4 alarm fire—one of the highest levels in Hong Kong’s classification system—as residents reported being trapped inside the building.

Footage showed large sections of flaming green scaffolding mesh collapsing and drifting in strong winds. By 4 pm, sparks and debris had ignited a second fire at a nearby building, raising fears of a broader neighborhood-wide emergency.

Hong Kong’s Fire Services Department and police urged residents to stay indoors, close all windows and doors, and avoid the area entirely. The Hong Kong Observatory has maintained a red fire danger warning since Monday, with dry conditions and wind speeds increasing the threat of rapid fire spread.
