Classical vocal technique is classic for a reason - it has enabled and empowered good singers for HUNDREDS of years. But don't be fooled into thinking that traditional technique only applies to traditional singing. Those of you who have watched my videos for a while will know exactly what I think of that!! My training is classical, in the bel canto style, but my love of music and songs in universal. I bet you didn't know that I was a massive Limp Bizkit fan back in the day... What classical style exercises do is bring good solid technique to our singing; good breath, good vowel placement, good resonance, etc. These are the building blocks for our voices and what you chose to build on top of those good foundations is up to you. And yes, it could be Nu Metal!

In this video as always we start with our breathing, with an inhale/exhale exercise and then some CHOO CHOO train noises. Good breathing technique is essenial for all singing. Our SOVT (Semi Occluded Vocal Tract) exercise is some lovely lip bubbles, alternating between legato and staccato arpeggios before we stretch and open that voice with MMM AAH interval slides. Next we tackle some open vowel placement with repeated five note scales to LA then ME then DO. After that we open further with a NAH vowel to octave arpeggios before our final vocal exercise of singing a WEE vowel to an octave leap al falling through the chromatic scale. All finished off with another quick breathing exercise to calm us. Feel the space of sound in this one!
