Far in the easternmost corner of India, in the Lohit Valley of Arunachal Pradesh, lies the remote settlement of Walongโa place where the icy waters of the Lohit River wind through the Mishmi Hills, brushing the tri-junction of India, China, and Myanmar. In the autumn of 1962, this isolated high-altitude (Almost 15,000 Feet above sea level) outpost became the unlikely setting for one of the most extraordinary battles in Indian military history. Between 22 October and 16 November 1962, Walong witnessed an epic confrontation between 2,500/- Indian defenders and the might of the 15,000 Chinese Peopleโs Liberation Army.
The Indian side was manned by battle-hardened yet under-equipped troops from the Kumaon Regiment, Sikh Regiment, Gorkha Rifles, Assam Rifles, and Dogra Regiment. Fighting in extreme cold, they had little more than grit, discipline, and courage to match the enemyโs overwhelming numbers. Their defensive positionsโAshi Hill, Green Pimple, and the Tri Junction Ridgeโwere not just geographical features, but steep, treacherous battlegrounds where each inch of ground was paid for in blood.
Opposing them was 15,000 meticulously prepared Chinese forces. Their strategy was precise: secure the tri-junction to gain tactical dominance over the Lohit Valley and open a pathway into the Indian plains. They moved along the ridgelines cloaked by dense forests, used the sharp Himalayan slopes for concealment on commanding heights. By cutting supply lines, isolating forward posts, and launching diversionary assaults, they aimed to dismantle the Indian defence sector by sector. Night-time infiltrations allowed them to bypass strongpoints, while coordinated multi-directional attacks kept the defenders under constant pressure.
But the Chinese advance met an unexpected wallโthe sheer will and gut of Indian soldiers. The men at Walong refused to surrender ground easily. Every ridge became a fortress, every spur a trap, every river crossing a barrier. Fighting with outdated rifles, limited ammunition, and minimal winter gear, they forced the enemy into a prolonged and bloody struggle.
This talk-doc by Unsung India Foundation revisits the battlegrounds of Walong, blending archival material, eyewitness accounts, and expert analysis. We explore not just the military strategies, but the human spirit that defined those daysโhow a few thousand Indian soldiers, in one of the most isolated corners of the country, stood firm against the tide. Walong is not just a story of warโit is a story of courage, sacrifice, and the indomitable will to defend the nation, no matter the odds.
In next episode we will witness how 2,500 Indian soldiers stood their ground and laid down their lives against 15,000 Chinese troopsโyet refused to let China seize the area
