CNA Skills: How to Weigh a Patient

As a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), one of your most important responsibilities is accurately weighing patients. Patient weights are critical for medication dosing, monitoring health conditions, and tracking treatment progress. In this video, Nurse Eunice demonstrates the correct procedures and best practices for weighing patients safely and professionally.

✅ Preparation: Make sure the scale is clean, balanced, and placed on a flat surface before use.

✅ Safety: Always use gait belts or assistance devices if needed, especially for patients who are weak, unsteady, or post-surgery. Ensure the patient is wearing nonskid footwear.

✅ Accuracy: Ask the patient to remove heavy items like jackets, shoes, or medical equipment not required during the weigh-in.

✅ Technique: Position the patient at the center of the scale with feet flat and body steady. For wheelchair patients, use a wheelchair scale or subtract the chair weight.

✅ Documentation: Record the weight immediately and report any sudden or significant changes to the nurse.

✅ Professionalism: Provide privacy, explain what you’re doing, and ensure the patient feels supported throughout the process.
