Gullah Geechee culture; Matriarch Carolyn White, the story of the Storytelling

Charleston is most known for the city's rich history. That history, lives on through the many people who have made it their missions to preserve and promote the Lowcountry's native Gullah Geechie culture.

This first story in the “Gullah Connections” series, shares the story of Ms. Carolyn White, of James Island, who some call the "Matriarch of Gullah Storytelling."

At 85-years-old, Ms. Carolyn White said her passion for preserving the Gullah culture is stronger than ever. For more than five decades, she has traveled around the world sharing the history of her people.

"People ask me that question, 'well how'd you learn Gullah?' And I say, 'how you mean man?' I live up and raise up with the Gullah folks on the island. So naturally you hear the click in my ear, and I can do that," White said.
