The deputy minister of social development has been urged by some tavern owners to take substance abuse campaigns to the shebeens and taverns. This is ahead of the World Foetal Alcohol Syndrome observed on 9 September to draw attention to the fact that women should not drink alcohol for nine months whilst pregnant. South Africa has seen a worrying trend of alcohol abuse among young pregnant women and even children, especially in townships. To take this discussion further we are now joined via Zoom by the spokesperson for the Department of Social Development, Lumka Oliphant.
