On July 9th, 1992, 33-year-old Darcy Staver was enjoying a stay at a rustic cabin owned by her and her husband, Michael. She was originally from Alaska, but as a couple, they settled down in Fort Lewis, Washington, where Michael was currently stationed. Michael had worked his way up the military chain of command to earn the rank of captain, and the couple was enjoying some time together in the woods.
Now it isn’t like the area is without the lessons learned from prior bear attacks. The problem is they happen so far apart in time that we tend to forget the lessons they present. In the same area, around Glennallen, about thirty years prior, a bear had invaded old man Strandberg's cabin and killed him, but that was twenty-nine years, and eleven months ago, and is a topic for discussion in a later episode.
As the Stavers slept, they were awakened by the muffled sound of thumping on the rear deck of the home. The noise persisted for a few moments, and as the Stavers peered out the window, they could see the source of the noise. A large black bear was pacing back and forth on the deck and seemed to be looking for a way into their cabin.
Now, this wasn’t exactly a common occurrence in the area, but it wasn’t unheard of either. Hoping the bear had stumbled upon the property by mistake, the Stavers began to yell at the bear and bang on the walls from the bedroom window, to try to scare it away. But the bear stared at them and immediately broke through the kitchen window on the ground floor and climbed inside the cabin.
The cabin wasn’t particularly large, and as the bear entered on one end, the Stavers fled out the other. Hoping the bear would be content with whatever it was searching for inside the cabin, the couple felt safe outside.
But that didn’t last long, as the bear soon discovered they had fled and followed them. Now being pursued by the bear, they climbed onto the roof, hoping to create some separation. As they climbed, Michael held tightly to his 22 caliber pistol that he had grabbed before fleeing. The couple didn’t have bear spray, so the pistol was their only hope for self-defense.
Once atop the roof, Michael decided that the bear needed some convincing to leave and fired several shots into the air and around the bear. It was undeterred, and the seriousness began to set in with the Stavers.
The cabin was accessible by boat only, and the Stavers had tethered theirs at the dock a short distance away. Aware that the 22 caliber pistol was inadequate to kill a threatening bear, Michael decided that the best option was for him to jump down, run to the boat, and motor to get help. Darcy would be safe from the bear as long as she stayed on the roof.
When the bear walked along the blind side of the building, Michael jumped to the ground and dashed through the woods toward the boat. Half expecting the bear to pursue him, he glanced over his shoulder as he ran. Pulling the rope from the cleat on the dock, Michael looked to see the bear’s location. It wasn’t chasing him and was staring at Darcy as she sheltered on the roof.
As she heard the boat roar off, Darcy watched the bear search the building for access to her. She felt confident that she was safe until the bear approached a spruce tree that stood next to the home.
She listened as spruce limbs popped and needles fell as the bear pushed its way through the canopy of the tree and onto the rooftop. With rising panic, she slowly edged toward the eave as the bear pulled itself onto the roof.
Now well within reach of the bear, Darcy knew her only chance was to jump from the roof and leave the bear stranded. She leapt and crumpled onto the ground several feet below and looked up to see the bear staring down at her.
Darcy was just about to her feet when she heard a loud thump right beside her. She looked over to see that the bear had also leapt from the roof and was now only feet away. She turned to run as the bear followed closely behind her.
Back on the Lake, Michael had made his way down the shore to a neighbor's cabin. Willing to help, his neighbor grabbed a hunting rifle and the two motored back toward the Staver cabin and nearby dock.
Jumping off the boat, the two men dashed toward the cabin, hoping to put the bear down so it couldn’t menace anyone else. As they approached, they could see the bear hunkered down over Darcy’s lifeless body.
The bear was brought down by rounds fired from the hunting rifle, ending its killing spree with Darcy as its only victim. Its carcass was examined, and it was found to be a male black bear weighing about 250 pounds and between 11 and 15 years of age.
